Color contrast is one of the key concepts of photography. Basically, it is the color "difference" between two objects or subjects.
The sharp difference allows a subject to stand out from the background or standout from a group or a cluster. The first thing that comes to my mind is a picture of a red umbrella in a "sea" of green umbrellas. Anyway, here's my own take on contrast. Here's a macro photo of a water droplet resting on a purple wildflower no bigger than my pinkie. I think the violet or purple flower is a nice contrast to the dark and green background.
For me, the water droplet in the middle of the flower further provided a bit of depth. I see this as another beautiful contrast: the relatively large violet petals surrounding the delicate yellow stamens which were magnified by the water droplet.
