Lessons to Learn on Focusing Your DSLR

Updated: Oct 24, 2019

Learning how to focus a DSLR camera is perhaps one of the most important lessons for an amateur photographer.

Here are a few lessons on focusing I learned so far.

1. ) Use a single point of focus. I recently tried to use a single point of focus with my Canon 1300D, and although my focusing is far from perfect, I am happy with the results. You can go to your camera's setting to set the single point of focus.

2.) Select your subject or point of focus and try to compose the shot. I think it is better to already have an idea of what your composition will be before pointing the camera lens. I think the bigger challenge is how to keep your hands steady. This is true if you are using telephoto lens and if you are taking macro photographs.

3.) Move your camera, not just the focusing ring. This is a lesson I learned from reading online references and so far, it is very useful.

Instead of moving the focusing ring, I find it easier to focus by moving nearer or farther from the subject, until you get the desired focus. Most of the photos that I have been capturing (or trying to capture) are macros, and focusing is much more important as my subjects are often very small.

In this water droplet photo, I focused on the bigger droplet as my main subject.
